The 2023 Women’s World Cup will be happening in nine cities and ten stadiums in Australia and New Zealand. The matches have already started, and the final is supposed to take place at the Sydney Football stadium on Aug 20, 2023.
The favorites for the win are the lionesses (England) who became the European Champions last year. Also favored are the previous Women’s World Cup winners including Germany, Spain, and the reigning champion for the past two world cups in 2019 and 2015, USA.
This year there will be a total of 32 countries participating instead of the 24 countries that took part in last year’s competition. There will be eight new countries taking part in this year’s Women World Cup and they are Haiti, Morocco, Panama, Philippines, Zambia, Ireland, Portugal, and Vietnam. There would be a starting number of eight different groups with four countries participating in those groups. When the group stage matches have been completed, the top two teams from each group will proceed to the knockout stages with 16 total countries.
This year’s mascot is Tazuni the 15-year-old penguin.
The name Tazuni is a fusion of her home, the Tasman Sea, which is situated between Australia and New Zealand, and the word unity, which organizers say is an important part of the event.
There will be a total of 64 matches in the 9 cities, five from Australia, and the remaining 4 from New Zealand. The cities hosting the matches in Australia are Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. The New Zealand cities that are hosting matches are Auckland, Dunedin, Hamilton and Wellington.
