The World of Pop Music Has Embraced Kamala Harris’s Nomination With Excitement: Here’s What’s Happening

By: David He

Ever since President Biden ended his presidential campaign and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, support for the Vice President has flooded the online pop world. Harris remixes are flying around TikTok, and pop icons are posting videos and photos of their support for the vice president, a frenzy that the Biden Campaign certainly has never seen.

For Harris’ campaign song, she chose “Freedom” by Beyoncé, and Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Knowles, posted a photo of her and Harris with a caption that reads: “New, youthful, sharp, energy!!!!”

The most commonly remixed clip of Harris is a speech she gave in May 2023 addressing the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity for Hispanics, as she recalls her mother’s words.

“She would say to us, ‘I don’t know what’s wrong with you young people. You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?’” said Harris.

Because of that statement, people on social media have been using a combination of a coconut emoji and a palm tree emoji to reference Harris’s campaign.

Pop icons are also getting in on the action. Katy Perry, a famous American pop singer and songwriter, posted and put together a montage of videos of Harris. For the music, she used a remix of the iconic “coconut” quote integrated with clips of Harris laughing in Katy Perry’s new song “Woman’s World.”

Charli XCX, an English singer and songwriter, referenced her latest album “Brat”, which has become very popular among Gen Z, by posting: “kamala IS brat.” In fact, the header for the official Harris campaign account of X has been updated to match the color and font of the album cover.

Before Biden dropped out of the election, the two presidential candidates, Biden and Trump, were both above the age of 75, so younger voters didn’t really connect with them at all. However, now that Harris has reached the younger side of voters on social media, especially Gen Z, she has given herself an advantage over Trump.
