Recently, a new nation was born. It consists of a small island and a few smaller outcroppings nearby. Known formerly as “Lamb”, it receives scarce attention, occasionally from kayakers or bird watchers. Lamb Island has been a place of nature’s beauty and has spawned myths and legends.
Possibility for this island is high, and it could be a real treasure. Uri Geller, the world’s most famous spoon bender and legendary psychic, owns the island. Now, 13 years after the purchase, he has made the grand gesture of converting it from a small Scottish private island to that of a country, with its own anthem, flag, and constitution.
Scotland itself is currently debating its own path to independence, and with the emergence of “The Republic of Lamb,” its competitor, Britain, has technically gotten smaller.
“Lamb is a place like no other,” says Geller. “It deserves its own identity. This is a fitting way to do it.”
Geller wants Lamb to be a symbol, a symbol of peace and harmony. Actual settlement on the island is not allowed, with the only inhabitants being an assortment of seabirds and recently a solitary rat.
“I always wanted to own an island, be like James Bond,” says Geller, 75, who first learnt about Lamb when he read that it was up for sale in The New York Times newspaper.
