After a horrible wildfire set Maui’s historic town of Lahaina to flames, Governor Josh Green labeled it ‘the worst natural disaster Hawaii ever faced’ as the death toll hit 93.
This horrific tragedy left buildings in ashes and cars in flames. The death toll is likely to grow over the next few days as they recover bodies and search the town. Finding human remains is difficult as they have already melted and only two people’s identities have been confirmed so far.
While first responders worked on the scene, they also had dogs sniffing and searching as well. Some residents were forced to jump into the ocean in order to escape. Almost 2,200 buildings were destroyed and torn apart and the total cost was estimated to be about $6b.
Governor Josh Green said that it will take forever to rebuild everything and that, “We can only wait and support those who are living. Our focus now is to reunite people when we can and get them housing and get them healthcare, and then turn to rebuilding.”
