British diver Tom Daley, who earned his fifth Olympic medal at the 2024 Paris Games, has announced his retirement from the sport. Tom Daley has enjoyed an extraordinary career that spans over 15 years. This announcement follows the conclusion of this year’s Olympics on Sunday.
At the age of just 14, Tom qualified for his first Games in 2008 and has participated in every subsequent Olympic event. He secured his first Olympic gold in Tokyo in 2021. His gold contributed to Great Britain’s overall gold medal count, which is 22, for the 2021 Tokyo Games. He is currently Team GB’s most-decorated diver, in terms of medal count, and he shared his decision to retire from professional diving in an interview with British Vogue.
“It feels extremely surreal,” he said regarding his retirement. “I was incredibly nervous going into this, knowing it would be my last Olympics.”
At the 2024 Paris Games, Tom secured a silver medal in the 10-meter synchro event with his diving partner, Noah Williams. “There was a lot of pressure and expectations. I was ready for it to be over. But when I walked out and saw my husband (Lance), my kids (Robbie and Phoenix), and my friends and family in the audience, I realized this is exactly why I did it. It was emotional at the end, standing on the platform, knowing it would be my last competitive dive. I have to make this decision eventually, and it feels like the right time. It’s the right moment to call it a day.”
Throughout his journey, he has earned numerous titles in European and World competitions. The Olympian boasts three bronze medals from the London 2012, Rio 2016, and Tokyo 2020 Games, as well as a gold medal in the 10m synchro event in Tokyo with Matty Lee, and his most recent medal from the Paris 2024 Games.
