What Happened?

After competing in 5 Olympic events, Tom Daley of the United Kingdom, announced his retirement in an interview. Over the course of his career, he has won 5 Olympic medals: one gold, one silver, and three bronze. His Olympic career started during the 2008 Beijing Olympics when, at just 14 years old, he became Great Britain’s youngest diver. He competed in all the Olympics from 2008 to 2024. Daley won his first gold medal in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo in the 10-meter synchro event. His last competition was the 10-meter synchro event in the Paris Olympics, in which he and his diving partner, Noah Williams, secured a silver medal for Britain while China took gold. Daley said, “There was a lot of pressure and expectations, and I was eager for it to be done,” (From BBC news). After his retirement, he started knitting and posted some of his work on social media, which impressed many people.

People’s Thoughts

After he announced his retirement, everyone was talking about it. Daley said, “I felt so incredibly nervous going into this, knowing it would be my last Olympics,” (From BBC News). His family was sad because they enjoy seeing him dive, compete, and win medals. A fan said, “Thank you, Tom, for all the incredible moments and being an inspiration to so many,” (From Google Search). But everyone was happy for Daley that he did win a silver in his last competition. One of Daley’s teammates said, “Tom has been a beacon of excellence and resilience in the diving world. His legacy will Inspire future generations,” (From Google Search).
