        Tom Daley Retires from Diving

By: Ellie Zhang

British diver, Tom Daley, who won his 5th medal this summer, has announced that he will be retiring from diving.

“It was emotional at the end, up there on the platform, knowing it was going to be my last competitive dive,” he told Vogue in an interview published Monday.

Daley, 30 years old, began his first Olympic career when he was only 14 in the Beijing 2008 Games. He has competed in all the games since then.

He won his first gold medal in the 2021 Tokyo Games, along with silver in Paris and bronzes in the 2012 London Games, also receiving worldwide titles.

“But when I walked out, and saw my husband (Lance) and kids (Robbie and Phoenix) and my friends and family in the audience. This is exactly why I did this.” Daley claims.

He has been on a hiatus in 2023, before announcing his retirement. He has overcome many injuries during his career; tearing a tricep, breaking a hand, experiencing “twisties”, and hitting his head on the platform.

Daley managed to win a silver medal in the 10-meter synchro event at the Games.

He also inspired many people to knit, after he posted many of his creations: including a Paris Olympics themed sweater.

“Thank you, diving over and out,” he said on Instagram.
