‘Twilight Zone: The Movie’ and the Deadly Accident That Plagued It

By: Harrison Chang

There are many accidents in our lives. There are accidents that shock us, hurt us or kill us. Kobe Bryant, a well-known athlete, is an example of people dying in accidents. Bryant was an honorable basketball player that deserves everyone’s respect. Many of Bryant’s teammates cried over his death.

Accidents don’t only happen to players in basketball leagues. Some accidents happen during the movie filming process. For example, during the filming process of an anthology film called “Twilight Zone: The Movie.” three people died. Two of them were just kids.

The tragic incident happened at 2:20 a.m. on Friday, July 23, 1982. When they were filming a scene about war, one of the helicopters got damaged because of the fake explosion behind it. The helicopter suddenly fell and impacted the lake’s surface. Then, it sank into the water. Sooner or later, the rescue crew came and pulled everyone out of the helicopter. During this process, the rescue crew noticed that some of the damaged blades from the helicopter had taken three people’s lives; two of them were just kids.

After this tragic incident, people found out more terrible stories about this whole film and its filming process. They found out that the director would force the kids to work and act late into the day. Maybe if he didn’t have them act that late, the terrible event wouldn’t have happened. According to the child labor law, kids should not work that late. Three years later, the director was called to court, and he was charged with manslaughter, which is a felony.

After this was exposed to the news, people began to think about whether art was worth such a high risk. Should we be willing to go to these lengths for art?
