The unmistakable white dress worn by Princess Leia in Star Wars was on bid at an auction, set for 2 million dollars. No one bought it. The minimum for the dress was $975,000. The company that held the auction, Propstore, said that they were still accepting post-auction offers. Propstore said in an NPR interview, “It may be sold after the auction in a private-treaty sale, or may be re-offered again in a future auction.” The costume is believed to be the only surviving piece from the movie. Aside from being a movie phenomenon, this dress was the last thing that people saw when the movie cut to the credits. Brandon Alinger, the chief operating officer of Propstore, says, “The dress is a real relic. It’s an absolute piece of film history.” Alinger also claims, “When Star Wars fans see it, they stop in their tracks, they gasp a bit at the sight of it, because they recognize the significance of it.”
The crew filming the movie had thought that it was destroyed with the rest of the set, but later found out that it was in an attic in London. It took a while for the professional textile conservators to get all the dust off the dress, and to restitch and fix it, but it is almost guaranteed that this dress is not for wearing anymore, just for bidding and auctioning. This Princess Leia dress, in the minds of people who know the Star Wars series, is priceless. Yet the people at this auction did not think so. In fact, they did not even make the minimum price.
