On Thursday, July 16th, the United States of America broke its coronavirus case record of 68,241, with more than 75,600 new infections in a day. COVID-19 has spread all across the U.S.A, making the number of infections increase faster.
This is not the first time the record has been broken this month. In fact, it is the eleventh time. In an article published in the New York Times, an unknown journalist wrote, “The number has more than doubled since June 24, when the country registered 37,014 cases after a lull in the outbreak had kept the previous record, 36,738, standing for two months. As of Wednesday, the country’s seven-day average case number exceeded 63,000, up from about 22,200 a month before. The previous single-day record, 68,241 cases, was announced last Friday.”
More than half of the states in the U.S. have required masks. In Arkansas, Governor Asa Hutchinson issued a face covering requirement on Thursday. In Colorado, Governor Jared Polis also required a mask order on Thursday. Masks are now essential to slow the spread of the virus.
However, there are still some states that do not think masks should be required. For instance, Governor Brian Kemp of Georgia announced this week that he was suspending all local mask mandates and even filed a lawsuit on Thursday.
On Thursday, Florida broke its single-day death record, reporting 156 fatalities. Florida was only one of ten states that shattered its death record in one day this week. Idaho, Alabama, Arizona, Utah, Oregon, Texas, Hawaii, Montana, Florida and South Carolina all have broken their records this week.
The attempt to control the coronavirus is largely an uphill battle. As Dr. Fauci said, “What I think we need to do, and my colleagues agree, is we really almost need to regroup, call a timeout — not necessarily lock down again, but say that we’ve got to do this in a more measured way. We’ve got to get our arms around this and we’ve got to get this controlled.”
Numbers have spiked in Bexar County, Texas. Thursday’s record included more than 5,000 cases there.
