UK Protests 2

By: Tiffany Han

On July 29, there was a small-scale event among Swifties to celebrate Taylor Swift in Southport, UK. Everything was going fine, until a tragedy happened. During the event, there was a stabbing incident. Eleven people were injured, including adults and kids, and three were confirmed dead. The royal family expressed their sympathies, and Taylor Swift herself said her prayers to those kids. Two of Taylor Swift’s fans organized a fund for those still in critical condition. The suspect was already arrested, but this didn’t sit well with the UK citizens. They were not happy.

Over the last few weeks, protests and riots were everywhere, according to the BBC. Mostly it was because the suspect supposedly used illegal immigration to arrive in the UK. So now there are people holding up signs not welcoming immigration everywhere on the UK streets. Some were also in response to the anti-immigration riots in England and Northern Ireland. They were, for the most part, pretty peaceful. But there were also a lot of violent protests too, and the police even started arresting people.

Last Wednesday, the police knew that there would be a riot and the police sent thousands of police officers to deal with the racism, or no immigration group. What they didn’t expect was the group against racism would show up, outnumbering the racism supporters. Thanks to both groups, the damage was minimal, compared to the expected result.

The prime minister, Keir Starmer, was very unhappy about the riots and said that he will demonstrate the consequences of going against the law. He said,”That should send a very powerful message to anybody involved, either directly or online, that you are likely to be dealt with within a week.”
