University of Tokyo Researchers Have Invented ‘Edible Cement’

By: Claire Wang

On Friday, 10th June 2022, researchers in Tokyo found a way to turn food waste into “edible cement”. This was developed because too much food was being wasted, and now researchers have found that a variety of foods can be used to make edible cement.

The problem of wasting much food is exists around the world. “More than 900 million tons of food is thrown away every year around the world. Not only is this taking up space in landfill, but it is also responsible for up to 10% of greenhouse gas emissions,” says the UN Environmental Programme’s Food Waste Index. However, scientists have found banana peel, onions, orange peel, tea leaves, coffee grounds, and pumpkin produce a material way stronger than concrete. Through this , researchers have developed edible cement.

To make the cement, researchers need to dry the food waste before crushing it into powder. Then, the powder is pressed into a mold. “This edible alternative could solve problems created by cement production and food waste,” says the researchers. Unlike like normal cement, edible cement can be decomposed. Not only can edible cement stop food wasting but can also stop problems like global warming. It creates less and can be turned back into food. Edible cement offers a glimpse into a greener future.
