USWNT Chases Third Consecutive World Cup Title

By: Gabby Zhou

The US Women’s National Soccer Team (USWNT) has won the last 2 Women’s World Cups. If they win the 2023 Women’s World Cup, it would be an amazing achievement as no one, men’s or women’s teams, has achieved this feat. Only four teams have gone back-to-back: Italy’s men’s team (1934, 1938), Brazil’s men’s team (1958, 1962), Germany’s women’s team (2003, 2007), and the USWNT (2015, 2019). Also, by winning this Cup, they would have five wins in total, only one win behind the most-ever – Brazil men’s team.

For the first match, victory against Vietnam was highly anticipated, but the score of 3-0 was slightly disappointing to fans after looking back at the 2019 Women’s World Cup 13-0 win over Thailand. But many are looking at the potential of Sophia Smith in her first World Cup appearance. She is the second youngest USWNT player who scored 2 goals in a half after she scored 2 of the 3 goals for Team USA.

In their second match, the Netherlands scored early and had a 1-point lead. But the US co-captain, Lindsay Horan, was able to score a goal in the 62nd minute. Finally, the score was 1-1.

In their third match, Neither Portugal nor the United States scored any points. The final score was 0-0.

Many on the team are playing in the Women’s World Cup for the first time. “This younger group, we definitely don’t lack confidence,” said Sophia Smith. “I don’t think it’s cocky. I don’t think it’s ego. I think we’ve come to a place where we know what we can do. We know what we’re capable of. And we know people may be calling us ‘The Future’ or whatever. But we know that we can impact the game right now. A lot of us want to prove that every single day,” she continued.
