Walking Soccer: The New Biggest Craze For The Elderly

By: Qinwei Wu

Since Gary Clark was seven, he loved soccer. He played it for more than four decades, but at age 48, he received a knee replacement. Soccer, which involves many high-paced movements, could worsen his other knee, creating more complications, resulting in him not being able to pursue his hobby.

However, in 2011, as part of a program for senior citizens, the Chesterfield FC Community Trust introduced its walking football program in Derbyshire, England.

Most of the rules in walking soccer are modified from regular soccer, to ensure players’ health and safety. The game is also played on a smaller field, and with a team of six instead of eleven.

The Federation of International Walking Football Associations (FIWFA), includes organizations from countries all over the world, such as Italy, Nigeria, India, South Korea, and Australia. There will also be a World Nations Cup: same as the World Cup, but for walking soccer.

More and more people are starting to discover walking soccer, including former soccer players and newcomers. George Gorecki, 62, used to play competitive amateur soccer before his arthritis formed. Now, he has started to play with Walking Soccer Chicago, along with other older members of the club, who are unable to play regular soccer because of their medical conditions.

A study from 2020 concluded that walking soccer is a safe and effective way to exercise, not only for traditionally healthy people, but also with people who have health limitations.

In another study conducted in 2022, seven men, with mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety, who underwent walking soccer reported to have enjoyed socializing and made new friendships.

Associate Professor of Sports Management at Florida State University, Amy Chan Hyung Kim, recommends that those who want to try out walking soccer should consult their physician first before jumping in, as walking soccer also has its own risks.
