Piet Mondrian is a Dutch abstract artist. He made a work of art called “De Stijl” that has been hanging upside down for a staggering 77 years! An art historian found this iconic work of art.
This abstract piece of art was displayed in the Kunstsammlung museum in Dusseldorf, Germany, on October 29. But this painting was displayed first at the New York’s Museum of Modern Art in 1945 and then hung in Dusseldorf in 1980. This painting consisted of red, yellow, black, and blue sticky tapes. An art historian, Susanne Meyer-Buser, had found out that it had been tilted the wrong way for a while. Ms. Meyer-Buser told a German newspaper, “In a photo from 1944, I saw that the canvas was the other way around on an easel. It intrigued me.”
The picture is currently hung with the red, yellow, black, and blue lines thickening at the bottom. The painting has more room between the lines at the top. “The top should be the thickening of the grid, just like a dark sky. ,” Ms. Meyer-Buser said to The Guardian.
“She is 100 percent sure that the painting is now tilting the right way. She knew this with the help of the curators. A 1944 photograph, just after Mondrian died. Also helped Meyer-Buser determine the painting’s direction Also, there is a painting that is on display in the Paris museum that has lines thickening at the top.
Ms. Meyer-Buser believes Mondrian did not finish the painting because there is no signature on it. All this evidence made everyone believe that it is the right way now. It is too fragile to touch the iconic painting now. The tapes are way too loose and hanging by a thread.
