The “Titan” submersible exploring the Titanic shipwreck imploded on June 26, killing five people on board. Passengers included the OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, French explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet, Guinness World Record holder Hamish Harding, Engro chairman Shahzada Dawood,19-year-old son the younger Dawood recently completed his first year as a business major at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland.

After about 90 minutes of diving into the ocean, the navigation controls lost contact with the submarine. At the time, the sub was 700 kilometers south of St. John’s Newfoundland, with a depth of 10 Eiffel towers stacked on top of each other.

The rescue mission started on June 19, the day after the sub got lost. OceanGate Expeditions estimated that the five passengers had around 96 hours of oxygen left. U.S. coast guard Rear Admiral John Mauger said that his remote-controlled vehicles discovered a piece of the Titan on the sea floor about half a kilometer away from the Titanic shipwreck.

After the discovery of the broken piece, OceanGate determined the fate of the submersible to have been an implosion. The company will continue to look for more of the scattered pieces of the long-lost Titan.
