Why Americans Should Wear Face Masks

Why Americans Should Wear Face Masks

By: Hannah Sang

Dear Editor,

It’s currently been about 4 months since school districts started closing and the coronavirus struck hard on the world. Recently, coronavirus cases have been hitting all-time highs in specific states, and they’re breaking records for the most coronavirus cases. However, many Americans still don’t feel the urge to wear a mask, and this could be very damaging to the recovery process of our nation.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on a survey from May 5 to May 12, 17.1% out of 4,042 respondents said they either rarely or never wore a mask in public. Steve Lopez, a columnist for the Los Angeles Times, interviewed people on the streets of Glendora, California to learn about people’s thoughts on wearing masks. He reported that two-thirds of the people he saw were not wearing masks, and a 77-year old man not wearing a mask even said that people wearing masks were driven by “political scare tactics.”

Many different studies and reports prove that wearing a mask is beneficial in not transmitting the coronavirus. A review of 172 conservational studies published in The Lancet concluded that wearing face masks or coverings can help decrease the risk of coronavirus infection and transmission.

The solution to this problem is to just wear a face mask. It’s a really simple solution, and it’s seriously not understandable why people can’t follow mask protocols. Besides, if someone wears a mask, the worst thing that they can get out of the situation would be wearing a piece of cloth on their face.
