Why Chris Evans Should Be Nervous About Playing Buzz Lightyear

By: Carys Wee

In the Toy Story movies, Buzz Lightyear is usually played by Tim Allen. In this year’s new movie, however, he is played by Chris Evans. In an interview, Evans said that taking over the part was nerve-wracking. Being the second actor to play the part of Buzz, he wanted to find the character in himself. Evans should be nervous about playing the part. Here’s why.

When playing the star character, you have big shoes to fill. Allen set a high standard since he is well-known and kids of all ages grew up with his voice. Many people already have an idea of what and who Buzz is. Chris Evans has to fit those standards while learning how to express Buzz’s character traits in his voice.

The second reason why Chris Evan would be worried is that he had no real experience in voice acting. Voice acting is different from on-screen acting since when you’re on-screen people can tell what emotion you’re feeling by the look on your face. In voice acting, you can only use the tones of your voice.

Since Toy Story is a huge and iconic movie, Lightyear is based on the Toy Story franchise. The audience might not accept the new voice behind the classic character, as Chris Evans is already known for his role as Captain America in the Marvel Universe.

“For me as an actor it’s so easy to play off of the world around me, play off other actors, to play off the environment, to listen and react, but when you’re voice acting you’re alone in a booth and you’re doing the same line over and over again and you start to get pretty self-conscious,” Evans told NewsRound Press Pack. Evans shouldn’t be so worried that he backs out. He has great experience acting in hit movies. He is a great actor and will most likely achieve an amazing result for the upcoming movie.

Chris Evans is already a well-known actor, as kids know that he is Captain America. He should nail the role with no problem, but I feel that he should be nervous at the part. He has big shoes to fill, he has no experience in voice acting, and people might not like the new voice for Buzz. Go watch the movie and see what you think about it.
