Why do Parents and Children Like Bluey So Much?

By: Alvin Xu

Bluey is an Australian cartoon about a family of dogs called the Heelers. The series was so popular that it won an International Emmy! In each 10-minute episode of Bluey, the situations are simple.

Bluey has attracted millions of people to watch it. It inspired podcasts and has all kinds of merchandise. The reason why Bluey is so popular is that it has a mix of parental humor, preschool silliness, and deep humanity. Parents like the show as much as kids.

Bluey, the main character in the show, is 6 years old. Bluey and her little sister, Bingo, have amazing parents named Bandit and Chili who seem to always be playing with their kids.

The show is resourceful. In one season, Bluey asks Bandit if they can play a game. Bandit says that “As long as it’s one where I don’t have to move any part of my body or say anything with my mouth.”

Dave McCormack is the person who voices Bandit. He sees himself a lot like the character. “There’s some episodes where he tries to invent games where he gets to just lie on the couch and read the newspaper or watch cricket or something. I find in real life as a dad, I try and invent games that involve me lying on the couch and watching TV as well,” he said, laughing.

Bluey does not shy from tough topics, like death. Once, she found an injured bird, her dad took it to the hospital, and even despite her efforts the bird still died. “In most kids’ shows, the bird would miraculously recover and, you know, be the comedic family pet for the rest of the series. But in this episode, the bird doesn’t recover and dies, and for a kids show to be dealing with the death of an animal is pretty unusual. But it’s good that it deals with real stuff,” said McCormack.
