Why Is the World’s Best Swimmer Not Swimming at the Worlds?

By: Reese Yan

What is the reason you play sports, interests, or medals? Most people do sports for medals or work hard to get into championships. But some people play because of both, and the “ Some people” include Ariarne Titmus. When Titmus was seven years old, she started to have a talent for swimming. Her progress was as quick as her swimming. Soon enough, Titmus had to move to train better since the swimming equipment she had wasn’t the best. Titmus’s parents eventually told Titmus that moving was the way to improve her swimming skills. When Titmus moved, her coach noticed that Titmus was faster than Katie during practice. ( 400m 16 seconds off, 200m 8 seconds off) At the 2017 world championship, Titmus won her first major medal in a relay. Titmus said, “I just really wanted to think about the long term,” she said. “And I really don’t care — it doesn’t bother me that I’m not going to be in the headlines or the media or the spotlight when the world championships are on. That’s not why I swim. I swim because I love it and I want to perform on the biggest stage, which for me is the Olympic Games.” I think Titmus is a person that achieves her goal with confidence. Because Titmus said that she didn’t need to go to the world championships because she believed she could win it and achieve a bigger goal of getting to the Olympic games. News says that Titmus won the Tokyo Olympic Games last summer. That gives Titmus the confidence to believe she can win the Olympic games if she just tries hard enough. Many people felt upset that Ariarne Titmus didn’t go to the world championship in Australia. I believe the decision Titmus made was the best for her, and in the future, Titmus will have more opportunities than just one.
