WHY WE SHOULD GET PETS

By: Aurora Cai

Owning animals such as dogs and cats can benefit people by improving education, providing companionship, and teaching responsibility. When you’re ready to buy one, a variety of different breeds and personalities are available to choose from. If you decide to get pets this is what you should know.

Improving education, getting a companion, and increasing responsibility are all very important, though before deciding to take the leap and purchase an animal you might want to consider some downsides. Negative parts of owning a pet include having to take time to make sure they are happy, needing to have access to more money, and being prepared for extra planning when going out of town. Even though these cons exist, it is my opinion that the pros outweigh them.

It’s important to consider that people have had pets for generations; if they weren’t beneficial then we would have stopped owning them a long time ago. “The history of pets is intertwined with the process of animal domestication, and it is likely that the dog, as the first domesticated species, was also the first pet. Perhaps the initial steps toward domestication were taken largely through the widespread human practice of making pets of captured young wild animals.” Britannica stated.

Improving education is another huge benefit. Being better educated can help you get further in your career and also help you get have better understanding of the people around you. According to Pets in the Classroom, “56% of parents report that having a pet helped improve their child’s academic performance” and “3 in 4 (78%) say pet interaction in school is important to reduce students’ anxiety.” This means that if you get a pet, it can probably help you increase your grades in school or improve your learning abilities.

Another positive to pet ownership is that you can get companion who can be a great listener. HelpGuide states, “[p]ets, especially dogs and cats, can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, ease loneliness, encourage exercise and playfulness, and even improve your cardiovascular health. Caring for an animal can help children grow up more secure and active. Pets also provide valuable companionship for older adults.” This proves that pets can be very beneficial and can help provide a lot of companionship to everyone.

Another benefit to owning a pet is teaching responsibility. Being more responsible can help improve parent trust. “Before you actually go out and get your pet, you should truly assess whether or not you are capable of giving them the care and attention they will need. This includes the basic necessities such as food, water, toys and shelter along with other responsibilities that involve grooming, training” Petcover explained.

Knowing about all of these benefits, you should go adopt a dog RIGHT NOW so, you can start improving your life.
