Jonathon, a Seychelles giant tortoise, turned 190 years old recently. He is the oldest animal in the world. His birthday was celebrated with a big party which included a special salad cake. He has been around for so long that he was there before the internet, computer, typewriter, and even the light bulb!
Jonathan’s diet is made up of lots of fruits and vegetables. He currently lives in Saint Helena and lives in the governor’s house called the Plantation House. He was brought there after his original owner became governor. Jonathan currently has three other tortoises at the Plantation House to keep him company.
Nobody knows exactly how old he is, however, and he was first documented as an adult in 1882. Since Seychelles giant tortoises take about 50 years to become an adult, it is estimated that he was born in 1832. Being this old doesn’t come without health problems, though.
Jonathon is now blind and can’t smell. He does maintain a good appetite and a good sense of hearing. Jonathan is truly one amazing animal.
