Worms Can Sniff Out Cancer

By: Cathy Cai

It is strange to learn that a type of worm can sniff out cancer. Some scientists have been conducting experiments with these worms. They scientists make a microscope slide and put a healthy human cell on one side, and a lung cancer cell on the other side. The worms go in the middle. From this position, the worms can sniff both ends of the microscope slide. In these experiments, hungry worms tend to go the side with the lung cancer cell.

It is fascinating that a worm can sniff out a lung cancer cell. I think if scientists do more research, then they might be able to use the worms to find a faster and safer way to test for cancer. They could even use these worms to detect cancer early, heightening a person’s chance of survival.
