Class Syllabus – Grades 6-8

Objective: Students will be able to write a strong review for a book, movie, or even their day!

Essential Questions:

  1. What is the purpose of a book review?
  2. What are four strong ways to start a review?
  3. What are some things to keep in mind when writing a review?

Enduring Understandings:

  1. A book review’s purpose is to help people decide whether or not the book would interest them enough to read it.
  2. Four strong ways to start a review are with a quote, some interesting background, a fun fact, or an explanation of a term.
  3. Four reminders when writing a review: Explain your opinion, persuade the reader, consider a work’s context, try to understand the artist’s intent.

Standards

Grade 6: L.6.3. Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening. A. Vary sentence patterns for meaning (syntax), reader/listener interest, and style/voice. B. Maintain consistency in style and tone.
