Writing Lab #2: Misplaced Modifiers

Class Syllabus – Grades 6-8

Objective: Students will be able to identify when a modifier is misplaced and edit a sentence for clarity

Essential Questions:

  1. What is a modifier and what is its function?
  2. Where should a modifier typically be placed?
  3. Why is it important for modifiers to be next to what they are referring to?

Enduring Understandings:

  1. Modifiers are words that add extra detail to the object they are referring to, and they help to specify.
  2. A modifier should always be placed next to what it is referring to.
  3. It is important for modifiers to be next to what they are referring to because otherwise, the sentence can become unclear or confusing.

Standards:

Grade 6: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.6.1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.

Grade 7: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.7.1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. Grade 8: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.8.1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
