Writing Lab #2: Misplaced Modifiers

Class Syllabus – Grades 6-8
Objective: Students will be able to identify when a modifier is misplaced and edit a sentence for clarity
Essential Questions:
- What is a modifier and what is its function?
- Where should a modifier typically be placed?
- Why is it important for modifiers to be next to what they are referring to?
Enduring Understandings:
- Modifiers are words that add extra detail to the object they are referring to, and they help to specify.
- A modifier should always be placed next to what it is referring to.
- It is important for modifiers to be next to what they are referring to because otherwise, the sentence can become unclear or confusing.
Standards:
Grade 6: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.6.1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
Grade 7: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.7.1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. Grade 8: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.8.1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
