We can’t believe it is almost the end of January! Let’s end this month off on a great note by reviewing our comma usage, making sure that our sentences are combined in clear and concise ways.

Writing Lab #7: Comma Usage

Class Syllabus – Grades 6-8

Objective: Students will be able to utilize commas correctly and purposefully in their writing to enhance clarity.

Essential Questions:

  1. What are the functions of a comma?
  2. What are the different uses of a comma?
  3. How can I utilize commas within a sentence in an accurate and purposeful way?
  4. Why is it important to use commas in your sentences?

Enduring Understandings:

  1. Commas are a grammatical tool that indicates a pause in a sentence, set off words, or separate items in a list.
  2. Using commas purposefully can allow you to clarify or enhance the meaning in your writing.

Standards:

Grade 6: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.6.2 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. Grade 7: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.7.2 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. Grade 8: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.8.2 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.
