Writing Lab #10: Clauses and Quotation Marks

Class Syllabus – Grades 6-8

Objective: Students will learn the grammar rules of independent and dependent clauses, as well as how to use quotation marks correctly.

Essential Questions:

1. What is a clause?
2. What are independent and dependent clauses?
3. When do we use quotation marks?
4. How do I punctuate quotations?

Enduring Understandings:

1. A clause is a subject-verb pair.
2. Dependent clauses cannot stand alone – they must be attached to an independent clause.
3. We use quotation marks to show direct quotes, for dialogue, when writing certain titles, or to otherwise set aside words in text.
4. Punctuate quotations by placing the punctuation mark inside the quotation marks. The exception is when the punctuation mark is an exclamation point or question mark not included in the quote itself. Then, the punctuation goes outside the quotation marks.
