Writing Lab #9: Writing Descriptions

Class Syllabus – Grades 3-5

Objective: Students will be able to write descriptively.

Essential Questions:

  1. What does it mean to write descriptively?

  3. What are the basic tools for descriptive writing?

Enduring Understandings:

  1. To write descriptively, an author will use details that appeal to the senses of the reader. The reader should feel like they are immersed in the story because the imagery is so strong!
  2. We want the reader to experience — see, hear, taste, feel or smell — what is most important and memorable about this scene.
  3. The basic tools for descriptive writing are metaphors, similes, and using the senses.
