Youngest Olympic Trials Competitor Falls Just Fractions of a Second Short

By: Kevin Lee

On June 23th, 2024, Quincy Wilson competed in the Olympic Trials’ 400-meter final to join the American Olympics Track and Field team. Today, he is the youngest competitor to compete in any Olympic Trials. He was only 16!

The young and daring athlete achieved a time of 44.59 seconds—a personal best. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to get him on the team… as an individual runner. Wilson still has a chance to run with the U.S. 4×400 relay team.

Quincy Wilson had two record-breaking runs during the trials. He broke the record for the fastest time for under-18 runners, twice! On the 21st, he had a time of 44.66 seconds. The former record was set by Darrell Robinson in 1982, and went unbeaten up until 42 years later.

Quincy Wilson was born on January 8th, 2008. He started athletics when he was 8-years-old. Wilson was moved from Virginia to Maryland to attend Bullis School near Washington D.C.

The 5’9 Wilson at 140 pounds was admired by even his higher-placed competitors. One of the fastest runners in the world, Michael Norman, said that, “He’s not letting the moment get too big. He’s living in the moment and competing, so it’s great to see young talents like himself elevate.”

Although Quincy Wilson won’t be able to go as an individual runner, Wilson will have his chance to shine with the 4×400 team.
