Yuji’s Divergent Fist Explained

By: Ivan Wang

Today, I will be breaking down Yuji’s divergent fist from Jujutsu Kaisen and explaining what it can do, its drawbacks, and what exactly happens when Yuji uses it.

To begin, divergent fist is a product of Yuji’s superhuman speed, because when Yuji applies cursed energy to his attacks, they lag behind since he’s so fast. This lag creates a second impact. In other words, his divergent fist is when his cursed energy lags behind and creates a second blow that is completely separate from his first attack.

This can be used to confuse and disorient the enemy if they don’t understand what divergent fist is.
The drawback of divergent fist however, is rather big. When Yuji divides his attack into 2 blows that means that both of those blows only have half as much power than if he were to combine his cursed energy with his physical attack at the same time. This is a pretty big disadvantage, which is why Yuji didn’t use it after he learned black flash, until his fight with Choso, one of the death painting wombs.

However, there are some situations where this ability helped Yuji win. The most notable one is his Mahito, a disaster curse spirit, when he couldn’t harm him with normal attacks and knew he had to land a black flash in order to win. So, what Yuji did was use divergent fist to catch Mahito off guard and then use that moment to land a black flash on him and deal severe damage.

So, in other words, divergent fist is more of an ability you use to set up a stronger attack then something Yuji should use as a main form of attack.
